What happens if I receive a fine

In the event of a fine, we as the owner of the vehicle receive a notification from the relevant authorities with the aim of identifying the driver of the vehicle. Whenever possible, responsibility for the fine is transferred to the driver and the relevant authorities reissue the fine in the driver’s name. For this process, we charge a handling fee to cover our costs. Once the responsibility has been successfully transferred, the relevant authorities will contact the driver and send the fine by post. The deadlines for payment of the fine will be updated, so that the time required for the transfer of responsibility does not have consequences for the driver. In some cases, liability cannot be transferred and the penalty is paid directly by us on your behalf. In these cases, we will try to pay the lowest possible amount for the fine and charge the customer directly.
To contest a fine, the authorities must be contacted directly. More information about this process and the contact details of the authority will be available about the fine you have received.

If I return the van early, will I be refunded?

You are charged a fee for each day (24 hours) of renting a vehicle. Whether you rent for just two hours or for 24 hours, you’ll still be charged for the entire day.

Early Drop-Off: If you return the vehicle, car, and any optional extras early, you will lose the benefit of any special offers if you no longer meet their requirements. This may result in a higher cost for the rental. There is no refund for unused days.

What happens if I deliver the van early?

In case it is extremely necessary to return the vehicle early, you can safely do so. Please note that if you return the car early and have prepaid for the rental, we will not be able to refund the remaining days. In addition, it is possible that the cost of the rental will increase as some discounts related to the duration of the rental that were originally applied may no longer apply.

I'll be bringing the van back late, is that a problem?

We understand that you may be late, which is why we try to be as flexible as possible. If you are running late or want to extend your rental, please contact us as soon as possible and we will do our best to accommodate you. If you return the vehicle late without first notifying us or extending the rental, you may have to pay a late fee.

If the car is delivered more than 29 minutes later than the end of the contract, your rental will be extended and you will be charged an extra day at the rental office’s price plus a late fee for each day, or part of the day, until the car is returned.

How is this penalty applied?

If you have not brought the vehicle to the office on the appointed day, this fee will be applied. If, after 24 hours, the car has not been delivered, a second commission will be applied and it will continue to apply every 24 hours until the car is returned to the rental office.

How much does the penalty cost?
The price varies from country to country, the prices listed below include taxes:

How can I pay for my rental?

We offer our customers different payment methods. You can pay online at the time of booking or at the time of pick-up and we will only charge you the total cost of the rental at the end of the rental. The choice is yours. We accept: American Express cards (excluding American Express Travellers Cheques), Diners, Discover, Visa credit and debit cards, MasterCard credit and debit cards and Avis Charge Card. There are some exceptions though. However, there are some exceptions: Debit cards are not accepted in Iceland and Canada. We also do not accept Visa Electron cards, Maestro cards, Cirrus cards, JCB cards and ALL PREPAID CARDS.
Maestro cards issued in Germany are only accepted in Germany. If you book online with a PREPAID card, you must show it at the counter together with another payment card among those accepted.

For some vehicles, you need to show two payment cards. If you booked online or by phone, this information will be reflected on your booking confirmation. Please note that the name on the card must be the same as the name on the main driver’s licence and must contain both the first and last names to be accepted. If you are an Avis Preferred member, your preferred payment method has been saved and will be used automatically every time you rent. Will I need to provide a pre-authorization?

At the beginning of the rental, we will ask your bank to block an amount of money. This is a temporary freeze on available funds. We do not charge or withdraw any money from your account. This hold is usually displayed as a pending transaction that reduces the available funds.

What happens if my rental van is stolen?

We offer our customers theft protection so that we can assist them if the car is stolen. In the event of theft, the amount the customer will have to pay will depend on the type of vehicle and the rental office. We offer numerous packages that allow customers to protect themselves in these situations, and reduce their financial liability. In any case, we ask you to be careful as you will not be covered in case you have to park the car with the keys inserted. Both your booking and your rental agreement will clearly show your financial liability in the event of damage or theft and our agents will be more than happy to discuss with you our options for reducing financial liability.

Can I extend the rental?

In case you want to extend your current rental we will do our best to help you. Please contact the rental station as soon as possible using the telephone number on the rental agreement. Please note that extra days will be charged at rates set by the rental station and your pre-authorization will be amended to include any additional charges.

We will do our best to extend your rental over the phone, unfortunately sometimes you need to go to the rental office and extend it yourself. If you are an Avis Preferred customer, you can use the Avis App to extend your rental.

When will the pre-authorization be issued?

When you complete your rental and return the vehicle, we will charge your card and the pre-authorisation will be issued by the card issuer. Depending on the card issuer, it can take up to 28 days for this to reflect in your account balance. Because the pre-authorization hold is not a charge, the release of funds may not be reflected on your card statement. It’s important to remember that even if the hold isn’t an actual charge, it temporarily reduces the balance available on your payment card until it’s issued.
